Jaswant Singh Khalra was a prominent Sikh human rights activist known for his groundbreaking research uncovering the dark reality of illegal killings and cremations involving the Punjab police. His work shed light on the brutal truth that the police had been involved in the extermination of approximately 25,000 individuals, including even 2,000 police officers who refused to comply. During the peak of militancy in Punjab, Khalra, who was the director of a bank in Amritsar, delved into investigating cases of alleged police brutality and sought to gather evidence against them.

The period following Operation Blue Star, the assassination of Indira Gandhi, and the 1984 Anti-Sikh riots saw the police being granted sweeping powers to detain individuals suspected of militancy or involvement in terrorist activities. Tragically, it was during this time that the police were accused of perpetrating staged encounters and burning thousands of bodies to cover up their crimes. Khalra dedicated himself to probing four such cases and collecting substantial evidence against the police.

In a grim turn of events, Khalra mysteriously disappeared in September 1995. The last sighting of him was in front of his house in Amritsar, where he was reportedly washing his car. Official reports later revealed that he had been abducted and taken to Jhabal police station, where he endured torture before being shot dead. His body was disposed of near the Harike Bridge on the Sutlej river.

The pursuit of justice in the Jaswant Singh Khalra murder case led to the conviction of four policemen who were found guilty and subsequently sentenced to life imprisonment. The convicted police officers include Sub Inspectors Satnam Singh, Surinder Pal Singh, Jasbir Singh, and Head Constable Prithipal Singh. Additionally, Jaspal Singh, a Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP), was also sentenced to life imprisonment in connection with the case by a Patiala court in 2005.

Returning to Diljit Dosanjh, the talented actor is set to portray the character of Khalra in the upcoming movie. Apart from this project, Diljit also has Imtiaz Ali’s Chamkila in the pipeline, where he stars alongside Parineeti Chopra. Chamkila delves into the untold true story of Amar Singh Chamkila, the legendary rockstar from Punjab who gained fame in the 1980s with his powerful music.

After months of waiting for release clearance, the makers of Ghallughara found themselves in a prolonged battle with the CBFC. The film underwent a rigorous approval process, with the board ultimately granting it an ‘A’ certification but with the condition of 21 cuts. The court has scheduled the next hearing on 14th July 2023, before Hon’ble Justice RI Chagla at 2:30 pm, raising hopes for a favorable outcome.
