What Separates a Film Review From a Reaction

A reaction reports an experience

“I loved it, the interval block is insane, go watch.” That is a reaction, and there is nothing wrong with it. It transmits genuine information — this person’s enthusiasm is real, and enthusiasm is contagious for a reason. For deciding whether to buy a ticket on Friday night, a trusted friend’s reaction may be more useful than any review.

What a reaction cannot do is survive disagreement. If you did not love it, the reaction has nothing further to offer you, because it never made an argument you could engage with.

A review makes a case

A review commits to claims about the film that can be checked against the film. It says the second act stalls because the antagonist disappears for forty minutes. It says the lead performance works despite the script rather than because of it. It says the songs were placed to sell singles rather than to serve the story.

Each of those is falsifiable. You can watch the film and conclude the critic was wrong. That vulnerability is the whole value — a judgement you can test is worth more than one you can only accept or reject.

The tell is specificity about mechanism

Reactions describe effects: it was gripping, it dragged, the climax was weak. Reviews describe causes: it dragged because three consecutive scenes deliver the same information; the climax is weak because the film resolves its central conflict through a coincidence it set up in the first ten minutes.

You can apply this test to any review in about thirty seconds. If the piece is entirely effects with no mechanism, it is a long reaction.

Why this matters more in Punjabi cinema

Smaller industries have thinner critical infrastructure. When most coverage is reaction, films receive praise or dismissal but very little analysis, and filmmakers get no useful feedback loop. Craft improves partly through being described accurately, and an industry that only gets scored rather than examined is being underserved.

This is the standard we hold ourselves to, imperfectly. When we publish something that is really a reaction, we would rather you call it that.
